A National Chickpea Breeding Program

Chickpea Breeding Australia (CBA) is a collaboration between NSW DPI and GRDC that sees $30M invested in the capacity and capability of the national chickpea breeding program to breed better chickpea varieties faster.

Chickpea Breeding Australia continues the extensive work done by Pulse Breeding Australia which was led by NSW DPI in partnership with GRDC, Queensland’s Department of Agriculture and Fisheries, Agriculture Victoria and the South Australian Research and Development Institute..

Chickpea Breeding Australia aims to create adapted desi and kabuli chickpea varieties through the implementation of best practice breeding and variety delivery to increase the rate of genetic gain and impact on grower profitability across Australia.

We are focussed on maintaining and increasing the current area of chickpea production as well as driving expansion in new chickpea growing regions across Australia

By 2025 we expect Chickpea Breeding Australia to be approximately ten times its current size.

Significant Long Term Investment

Chickpea Breeding Australia is a significant long-term commitment from NSW DPI and GRDC to invest in the development of new chickpea varieties for Australia growers including development of infrastructure and investment in human resources.

Based at the Tamworth Agricultural Institute, Chickpea Breeding Australia has twelve direct employees which includes five new full-time positions that were created through the transition from our previous breeding program.

Across Australia, six regionally-based seed partners play a crucial role in providing growers with the latest chickpea varieties. Chickpea Breeding Australia has sub-contracted ten organisations to deliver genomic technologies, field evaluation trials and biometrics support.
